NOT a Boy Page!!! --- Jr. Spirit Squad!

I'm back!  Really did not plan on taking a several week break from the computer and blogging, but there it is.  I was happy to have my kids and grandkids come to visit last week (which took a week of prep to get ready for them! LOL!).   I've also had a bit of a relapse with regard to my RA which can make working with my hands difficult.  But enough on that... on to scrapbooking which always makes me feel better! 

I had multiple photos of my granddaughter from the half-time basketball game at which the "Junior" Spirit Squad performed.  Love the sunglasses the girls were sporting!  Love that sassy attitude that comes through! 

As usual I worked from the colors in the photos, finding the perfect blue arrow print along with the black and white print.  Those were cut into two angular sections and overlapped on a white background sheet. 

Because there was so much going on in the photos themselves and I wanted to use multiple photos, I chose not to layer them at all, but rather to arrange them in a tight configuration.  I did accent the photo arrangement with several small puffy stickers and one label sticker, placing those at the left, leading side. 

The title found its home at the right side of the photo arrangement and I added a border by way of another puffy sticker (snipped int two pieces) for the title to kind of sit upon.  And I also could not resist placing the sunglasses puffy sticker jauntily at the top of the title!


Many time when working with multiple photos, especially when there is a lot of activity going on in the photos, I find I am happier with the "less is more" tactic.  There are exceptions of course, but usually for me I am happier with the outcome if I do not over do it. 

A little outlining and some journaling completed the page and tha-a-a-a-a-at's all folks! 

I was happy to get these girls' first performance documented and I hope they have many more occasions to perform (and for me to scrap!).

How to Get the Most Out of a Kit?

Still working with Scrapbook Circle's August offering and as I have said before I was gonzo for this kit.  Most of the pages created were of scenic photos... which are usually problematic for me. 

But what I really wanted to talk about a little bit was how to actually work with your monthly kit club offering to get the most out of it.  I was able to make seven pages from this particular kit.  I got nine pages from the one Gossamer Blue kit I experimented with.  How does this happen? 

Gotta slice those papers up.   Just.  Have.  To.  Cut.  Them.  Up.  

And this is what it looks like. 




Often there is a print on BOTH sides of the paper that I particularly like and that I want to use.  So why choose between them?  Slice it up and use a bit of both...on the same page even. 

That wonderful Native American type print on the dark woodgrain background is simply gorgeous, but I also liked the gray hash mark print on the opposite side.  And I felt that as much as I loved the white and dark wood grain native print, it would be just too, too much if used as a full background.  By slicing it and flipping the larger middle piece over I got to use both sides. 

I did the same thing with the small triangle/mixed color stripe paper; loved both sides, so just slicing them into strips and flipping them over allowed me to see and use both sides.  Then I re-assembled the strips and glued them onto a 12x12 background piece that I am not likely to use at all.  That piece came out of a pad of paper and I knew I wouldn't miss it. 

Add photos, title and just a bit of embellishment and here you go. 

The photos are (kind of) a panoramic out over the canyon, so I just trimmed them up and put them side by side.  They really aren't on full layering pieces of paper; it's just little leftover strips and pieces tucked in to appear as if there is a larger piece behind the photo. 

As I said I mostly attacked  photos of a canyon park that we did a little side trip to on our trip along Route 66.  Palo Duro was very pretty, but it wasn't easy for me to scrap.  Not until I got this kit.  I have more photos of the canyon, but I think those will go into a Project Life type photo page and then I will mix that right into the travel album alongside regular 12x12 pages. 

And, as much as I have loved working with this kit, I am (as they say) over it now.  Ready to move on.  Also, I think the sign of a good kit--- that you burn right through it--exhaust it really and then you are ready for something else.  Which is exactly what will be coming in my next kit! 

I will have a couple more pages to post from this particular kit, whilst I await the arrival of the September kit(s).

Salvage the Page - Ketchup and Mustard

These little faces mean the world to me.  (Even the somewhat more mature face of their older brother at age 19, is still a "little" face to me and indeed still means the world to me.)  These little faces also speak volumes....right now they are screaming summer.  Ketchup and mustard costumes in place, my little grandies are ready to run a race against the Milwaukee Brewer sausages. 

I find myself often questioning where this complete and utter joy that children are so easily and quickly able to manifest goes as we become adults.  We are so mired down in the everyday details of one thing or another that must be done, the time limits and requirements imposed on us by work, government, and even family members. 

Working with paper and photos, paint and ink, releases me from that feeling of being mired down.  Add in the bonus of working with photos of these happy little faces and there is the double win of creating something that they will have in years to come. 

Now onto page details... 

Since I am working within my stash (still) I pulled whatever red and yellow print papers together I had in my tote and started with the photos, layering rectangles and slivers of papers till there were bits of reds and yellows peeking out all the way around.   The background seemed a bit stark white at this point, so I added a bit of yellow using a stencil and ink. 

Next was to create a border using small rectangles of the red and yellow prints adhering them at all four sides. 

Now the page seemed to be too busy for my taste.  What to do, what to do?  Now I am feeling a bit mired down with the details and the time already spent on the page.  so.  Now trying to salvage the work I had already down (and not waste the paper).  Thinking to self, if there is too much going on... remove something.  OK, let's try  trimming down the layers under the photos.  Better.  Then trimmed down the edges of the page itself, making the border narrower and adhered the whole thing on another white (back side of another paper I was not likely to use) sheet.  Winner, winner, chicken dinner!  (Why do people say that!?) 

I may not be running a race against folks dressed up as various types of sausages.  But working with ink, paper, and photos shouldn't make me feel mired down, or restricted.  And by focusing on what was possible, I got where I wanted to be. 

Hmmmm, not exactly the wild joy of the very young, but I'm working on it.

Picking, and Packing Page Kit Papers (say that ten times fast)

The photo is not the best, apologies...it was a bit windy on the patio so I snapped the page photos pretty quickly.  

Picking papers for a photo usually starts with color for me. I grab papers...multiple shades and combos of the colors represented in the photo.  I normally do not start with a pre-conceived idea of how the page is going to be arranged, so I pick both full size patterned papers and leftover cuts. And I do the same thing with cardstock... Think lather, rinse, repeat...( never did understand why those instructions were necessary on a bottle of shampoo). 

On this page, I wanted blues and grays (honing in on the water and the buildings).  I also wanted a neutral background, so in the page planner I included white, gray and beige 12x12 cardstock sheets, as well as a couple of options of map paper (only one of which I wound up cutting and using to break up the white), plus several smaller cut pieces of patterned paper in the blues and grays. 

Now to pack up kits, I use Cropper Hopper Page Planners.  I used to use 2-gallon plastic zip bags and those do work, but man, they slip and slide all over (and under) the place.  They would slide under other page kits and supplies in my tote or in a drawer, thereby bending papers and sometimes photos, requiring rather undesirable and inappropriate language...thereby altering my scrapbooking mojo a bit.... 

Besides the sliding about, zip lock bags do not have the half pouch on the backside like the page planners do, nor do they have the smaller pouch on the front keeping your photos easily at hand.  I use the pouch at the back for a selection of embellishments and for the small-ish scraps of papers, as well as ribbon or twine. 

When the page is complete, any leftover papers, embellishments and such get stored all together in one page planner, the other empty page planners easily slide into the front of my tote (in front of the remaining packed page planners -- or if at home I just make a stack of them under the desk).
Page Planners by Cropper Hopper, a very good thing!  They used to be sold in packages of three, not sure how they are sold now--I've had mine for years.  And how many?  That depends on how many pages you pack for a crop or how far out you like to plan your pages.  Sometimes I use the page planner to hold things I am acquiring for pages...like if you have some papers, but have ordered the embellishments for a particular line.  I think I must have 27-30 of them total.  (Told you--I love them.) 

Anyway, I have droned on about packing and selecting.... the above page is of the photos my grandson took from his hotel room view of Australia.  Part of the project I am making for him about his trip last summer.   Map papers were from Heidi Swapp, the No Limits paper pad.  I added a piece of patterned vellum, the charcoal gray patterned piece I think is an old, old, Cloud 9 paper, and the tags are from Crate and Heidi Swapp.  Alpha set is a foam Thickers set, and the enamel dots are from my stash of homemade(s).

Scrapping with Limited Supplies, but Scrapping Just the Same

We are here, at Dad's till the house is up.  That means we have the bare minimum of clothing, tools, toiletries, and most importantly (LOL) scrapping supplies! 

I packed my rolling tote and shoulder bag as if I was going to an extended crop.  (Look for more on how I pack in a later post.)  Now that we are kind of settled, it was time to break out the scrapping supplies!  Makes me a MUCH happier person to scrap, and blog and facebook.... 

The only "mixed media" I brought in my tote was watercolors, so I am mostly gonna be working with paper.  And that's fine with me, I love paper! 

Still working from stash stuff.  This page used a mix of Heidi Swapp No Limits papers and Echo Park's For the Record 2.  Embellishments are both cut and punched from the papers, plus a few stickers from Crate Paper's Open Road, as well as For the Record 2 .  Splattered on a little blue watercolor and called it done. 

What I really want to talk about... are the choices of the papers.  When all you are working with is paper; not a lot of ready-made embellishments, not a lot of punches on hand, my Big Shot is packed, the Cricut is packed, and I did not bring along a bunch of mists, gesso, texture paste or stencils...  it makes the choice of papers that much more important. 

For me, it's all about color then.  I focused on the colors in my Jackson's shirt and that red on the soles of his sandals.  Then I think it's a fun technique to add a small doses of a third color NOT represented in the photo.  This grabs your attention and directs the eye.  In this case, I used a mustard-y yellow.  See it?  It's only in three places, but that's enough.  Any more and it will over power the page and that's all you would notice. 

Photos are of my Jackson boy enjoying a Dairy Queen treat one afternoon while his mommy was helping sort out our garden (before we put the house on the market last year).   No big story, just photos  I love.

Are You Still Scrapping Christmas? Me Too! - 19 Kinds of Cookies

My daughter and I get together every year for a weekend baking extravaganza.  This year, since there is a long distance move coming up, we really pulled out all the stops and baked over two weekends.  My son came along and man, oh man, with three of us, we really went to town!  19 kinds of cookies! 

I wanted to document this, because the annual cookie baking weekend has become a part of our Christmas tradition.  And even if I am not here, but across country...I know the tradition will go on. 

To mimic the colors of the cookies, frosting and decorative candies, I chose several papers from a Pink Paislee holiday pad to work with.  Trimmed down a soft green tone on tone pattern and centered it on a pink and red diagonal mini stripe paper.  Since my photos were pretty busy, I didn't layer them at all, but chose instead to use the other papers I had chosen in small irregularly cut strips at the top and bottom of the page.  After that it was just a matter of picking out the right spots for some embellishment clusters. All the embellishments (except for the white paper doily and the red crocheted doily) are from Basic Grey's 25th and Pine collection.   The 25th and Pine stuff really seemed to coordinate quite nicely with the Pink Paislee papers, so I will definitely be using them together again (Lord knows I have an ample supply of Christmas photos to scrap yet!!) 

The title is made up of red foil Thickers and an older alpha set from Basic Grey--not sure, but I think it from their Wassail line of several years ago.  No journaling, but there is a list of the cookies on the back of the page. 

One of the things I really want to do is to make a Holiday Cookie recipe book for the family of all of our favorite cookies and holiday treats.  It's on my bucket list of scrappy things to do!!

Challenge Layout #5 - Craft Time at Nana's

So I had eight pieces of patterned paper in the Burlap and Bouquets collection pack and I am up to five pages completed!  This page was a challenge to do with this collection because almost all of  the papers have a distinctive grayed background and the photos had brights and whites... 

I used a white cardstock background because of the white styro cones in the photos...nothing else I placed it on looked right.  Then the white cardstock got trimmed slightly and centered onto kind of a peachy pink, dull red paper from the collection.  The other side of this paper was a reddish, peachy pink zig-zag pattern...just too busy. 

The photos were layered onto several papers (a happy scattered dot pattern, a minty green tiny chevron, the diagonal stripe and a small scrap of the aqua floral).  I wanted to use the bitty little alpha set that came with the collection pack, but I didn't want it to get lost, so I placed the title on a small kraft bag (kraft -- craft time,  silly pun intended).   The edge of the bag got tucked in behind the photo layers, journaling went on the tag that slides into the little bag.  Then I just added a couple of strips of paper at the top edge of the page and a few of the stickers, the flair badge and little sticker banners.  Last was to sprinkle on some of my homemade enamel dots (note to self:  must make more colors to choose from!). 

The phrase stickers I thought were particularly in sync with the layout; they read: "good things are going to happen" and "love you more each day".  Bella especially just lights up when I tell her we have a craft project to work on.  I want her to always remember these times with me as something special.  Kind of our thing together.

Challenge Layout #4 - Laugh

Still trying to crank out the pages from the Burlap and Bouquets collection.  I am actually finding this harder than working from the kit club.  This particular page I may not have ever posted, except for the challenge.  It was a hot, humid day; I had no makeup on at all, and had wound my sweaty sticky hair up on top of my head  Yeah, not a good picture day. 

But Bella was having such a good time while we were taking our "selfies".  When her Daddy came into the room and saw her giggling and carrying on, I told her to tell him what we were doing.  She was all over that, "We are taking selfies, Daddy!". 

I layered the green print on top of the arrow print to make the 12x12 background piece (since I had only partial pieces left of each).  Covered the seam between those two prints with a slice of the diagonal stripe.  I wanted to use the gold side of one of the papers as a punched scalloped piece, but I was downstairs and my punches were upstairs, so I took out my scissors and hand cut the strip into irregular scallops. 

Next was to layer the photos on some of the leftover scraps and get them positioned on the page.  I did some outlining and cut up a doily, adding pieces of it at the top and bottom of the photos. Two of the banner stickers plus one that I hand cut got tucked in with the lower doily.  I used the last of the cork words at the left side of the photos and then went to work on the top of the page.  I wanted to add a splash of white at the top to compliment the white of the doily at the bottom of the page, so I used a small white bag and placed one of the sticker phrases (cut into two pieces) on top.  Small strips of leftover papers were added at the top and bottom of the layout to help provide more of a frame for the page. 

Once again, almost the last thing I did was add the cluster at the top of the page and while I was doing that I added the enamel dots (my homemade ones!), a couple of the floral star stickers from the collection and another one of the flair badges. 

Whether I like the photo of myself or not, it was a fun moment with Bella and that's what counts.  She could care less about Nana's hair, she just remembers that we had fun taking "selfies"!

Challenge: Layout #2 - Happy Dog

I thought I'd do a page about one of our dogs, Abbie, for the challenge.  They are getting on in years now.  Getting gray in the muzzle. moving a little slower.  But they sleep right next to me at night (have to watch where I place my feet or I'm gonna trip on one of them in them in the middle of the night!), follow me to the bathroom, are waiting at the door when I get home.  They are truly unconditional love. 

I used several irregularly cut strips to create the border around the page, curled the edges a bit and then used the same papers (sometimes the flip side) to layer up under the two 4x4 photos.  I wanted to use at least some of the alpha set that was included in the collection pack, but I have to say I am not a fan of the printed burlap.  (What was I thinking when I bought this?  Not a clue.  I mean I still do like most of the papers... but not the burlap print...) But I was determined to use it.  I had also purchased a set of cork die cut words at the same time as the collection pack, so I included this pack in my challenge.  And I do like those.  Although the cork is rather brittle and you really can't go yanking it off the acetate or it will tear.  A gentler touch works just fine. 

Anyway, I went on and cut some banners, added one of the flair badges, tucked in a couple of those mini sign things and a tab.  Used one of the cork words as part of the title and used the alpha set for "dog".  Last I added the shorter banners at the top of the page and a couple of the stickers.  I always seem to do the smaller clusters at the top or sides of my page last...no real reason...that's just how it seems to work out.   

That was it.  This one didn't take very long at all to do.  Kind of happy about that.  And kind of happy to be using this collection up!

Problem Photos?

A while back I was blathering on about scrapping not so hot photos.  I think this probably fits within that definition.  I wanted these scrapped---but there were too many colors going on in the photos and since it was in the pool (and I was not--in the pool that is) I wasn't getting any good close ups. 

So.o.o.o.o.o.o. (I did this page quite a while ago, just never got around to posting it.)

I tried making this a two page layout.  Really wasn't happy with that.  It did work out better to keep the photos tightly grouped together on one page.  Tried a white background.  Oh, no.o.o.o.o.o.o.  so not good.  The brightness of all those colors in the photos was really glaring at me then.  It did look better to use bright colors for the background...but kept it kind of monochromatic and added in shots of color in the accents (the banners, the little strips at the top and the fabric brads). 

This is just one of those times that I wanted the photos scrapped---wanted to tell the story---.  This does.  (The story in short:  Miss Bella is usually the rather brazen, brash, no fear child.  But not in the water, she turned into the most cautious, almost clinging little girl!  We were cracking up.)  Minimal journaling went on the front of the layout.  Full story and Nana's thoughts are on the backside. 

Papers are super old Bo-Bunny and Fancy Pants.  I hand cut the banners, used an EK border punch for the large scalloped border pieces, along with some small strips of the coordinating papers. 
As far as the page goes... it's not anywhere close to being a favorite.  It's ok. 

Sometimes, ok has to be good enough.

Scrapping the Stash! - A Travel Layout

And now back to my regularly scheduled posts about scrapping from my stash... 

Not that I have been traveling, but my grandson has!  And I thought I better get his (few) photos committed to layouts before they are lost and stuck in a drawer. 

The No Limits pad (from Heidi Swapp) I found on clearance some months back has been wonderful for more masculine layouts and is proving to be equally great for travel pages.   Also using a travel themed packet (picked up at Michael's some time ago, but I think they still have it) made by Studio Calico. 

I used a map pattern and a grid pattern torn and overlapped for the background and edged the page with a very tiny sliver of an orange and off white embossed stripe.  I again went to a deconstructed style page design, placing the photos side by side and arranging elements around them. I started by picking up various strips and pieces of papers (the gold diagonal stripe, the orange polka dot, and the tan diagonal stripe) and then added a journaling box. 

Once the scraps of papers were in place, I cut apart the little calendar, the ticket stub and found the travel related stickers (from Basic Grey, Amy Tan, Heidi Swapp) and added  those in three clusters (forming the visual triangle at top right, left side and bottom right). 

The title letters were left from (you guessed it) the Sweater Weather kit, "explore" is from Heidi Swapp, the arrows punched from scrap. 

I seem to have an abundance of travel type stickers (left from other collections purchased long ago) because, like, I really haven't travelled!!!  ha, ha, Therefore, have lots of little things left in the old stash to do the grandson's travel pages without any additional expenditure!  Kind of excited about that. 

Is this living vicariously through one's grandchildren?  ok, I'll go with that.

Sweater Weather Layout #7 - NASA?

Wow, seven layouts from one kit!  I was not expecting this!  I am way happy with how far this kit has stretched. 

This page is a bit of a departure from cozy winter or holiday layouts, which is what you really think of first with a kit called Sweater Weather.  I really loved the Scraptastic exclusive red, white and blue diagonal stripe that was in the kit, so after some digging around, I found these old, old, old photos of our Jacob man on a rocket-ship ride at a shopping mall play-park.  Ah-ha!  Seems like a good fit for some  red, white and blue! 

From my stash on this one, just the starry vellum, and some cardstock.   I cut (Cricut) the title letters from red cardstock and the stars were cut from white cardstock with a Sizzix die (Primitive Stars). 

After I tore the corner of the vellum for some interest, I placed a large strip of the striped paper down on the right side of the page.  Then I tucked smaller strips of blue and red patterned papers under the photos and cut a few banners, as well as fussy cut a few little stars from the navy and wood grain star paper.  The last thing added to the layout were the larger white die cut stars.  Still not too sure about those stars; sometimes I look at the page and it seems far too busy and then again it will look ok.  Do you have those pages too? 

Journaling on the layout asks the question; will there even be NASA in the future?  I think it is just a shame that one of the U.S.' biggest achievements (our space program) has been decimated by our (stupid) politicians (both Democrat and Republican--I hold both parties these days in equal disgust-- some of the stuff they choose to spend our money on just boggles the mind).  This journaling is on the back of the layout.  I don't think it hurts to let folks in the future know your views on current events or politics.  It let's people know you better---but I also do not necessarily want this info taking over the page or the photos.

Happy New Year.  Happy January....  Mother Nature is having her way with us.  Bitter ugly cold outside and I've been sick with whatever this body aching, congestion, coughing, fever, chills, creeping crud thing is.  Yep, happy January...  (be happy when it is over). 

The only scrappy thing I've done is to pick up photos. 

But January is a big birthday month for us; it's about this only thing that gets me through... my dad's birthday, and both my grandsons' birthdays fall in January.

This was Jacob's 8th birthday and it was his first birthday shared with Nick's parents. 

Totally scrapping from my stash---some really old Kaliedescope papers from My Mind's Eye, a little Cosmo Cricket, a little Basic Grey, some wood veneer arrows, camera, and a flair badge.  Pretty simple, just a couple layers of paper and then the little tidbits tucked in here and there. 

Kind of an unusual birthday page, not really about the birthday but about beginnings... it went into his grad album(s) as a reminder of how things were. 

I am ever hopeful that I'll be scrapping this coming weekend.  But for tonight, a load of laundry is about all I am going to accomplish.

Stuff, Lots and Lots of Stuff (ephemera, stickers, and embellishments, oh my)

OK, so some scrappers can define their "style" by  describing themselves as a simple scrapper, or a minimalist, or being all about the patterned paper, or some such description.  But a defined style, me?  mmm, yeah, no. 

 As much as I jump around from subject to subject and year to year. I also seem unable to remain within one "style" of scrapping.  I can be perfectly enamored with lots of white space and minimal embellishments one week and the next be over the top for sticking on a stack of embellishments.  (Which is where we are at today; stuff, lots and lots of stuff.) 

When I saw some a couple of packs of very dimensional birthday embellishments at Michaels, I just loved them and snatched them right up. As it turns out, the paper rosettes, title banner, party hat and happy birthday sticker (part of the two different embellishment packs I grabbed) were re-branded Recollections, but are in fact part of the Party Day Maggie Holmes collection (no wonder I loved them).  I already had the ephemera pack (snared at Hobby Lobby weeks and weeks earlier) and sometime later I lucked into finding the Party Day paper pad on clearance. 

Now, with all this Party Day stuff collected I sat down to make Bella's party page.  Used two different background pieces, the diagonal red and pink stripe and the grid paper.  Prior to this I had stacked up and stapled together little piles of the flat ephemera, so I just tucked a couple of the piles in and around the photos.   I added the rosette and the party hat and then the banner title, which kind of gave me fits.  I mean that part should have been easy, peas-y.  But the title looked flat, so I cut out an extra sunburst layer for each of the letters and popped every other one up.  The sticker letters are from Echo Park, Little Girl sticker sheet and I think the party, play-fun day piece is from Heidi Swapp, but otherwise everything is Party Day.   

Where am I going with all this?  Well, there is a lotta, lotta of stuff on this page, lots more than I usually use.  So just when I think I have myself figured out style-wise, um, not so much.  I guess we'll just go with it and see where we end up.

Four-Square Page Design (and little boys and hats)

What is it about little boys and granddaddy's hats?  This is my Jacob man years ago at age three proudly wearing Boppa's felt cowboy hat. 

I wanted to use kind of a four-square design, and I wanted it to be casual and playful, so nothing is lined up, the outlining is done very loosely and I used three different alphas on the title square.  It's a really simple design, the four-square thing and worked out great for me because I didn't want to have to arrange and rearrange and rearrange again till I was happy with the photo placement.  It was 1,2,3 oh yeah, and 4 and I was done! 

Used Heidi Swapp No Limits papers and I think a piece of Echo Park's About a boy, as well.  Most of the embellishments are from the cut-a-parts in the No Limits pad or from a Heidi Swapp embellishment pack, but the viewmaster piece is from a Maggie Holmes emphemera pack, the Oh Boy is from the Echo Park sticker sheet (About a Boy or a Boy's Life---I can't remember which), and the little camera and dimensional star are from an Amy Tangerine embellishment pack.  The alphas used in the title are from the Echo Park sticker sheet, a Webster's Pages alpha set and the large textured red alpha are Thickers. 

And this was just taken the other day...our Mr. Jackson, a.k.a Bubba Lu (he's almost three)--and yep, he's sporting Boppa's woven cowboy hat! 

So funny to me---Jacob and the hat 15 years ago and Jackson now.  Little boys and granddad's hats, some things don't change, do they?  I may even use the same layout design to scrapbook this!
