I love challenge pages! I don't participate in each and every one I see... it depends on timing, supplies at hand, having the right photo... But I highly recommend watching the challenges presented on various FB groups... it's another way to motivate yourself to dig into older supplies and use them!
This particular challenge (from Mercy Tiara's 27 Day Challenge FB group) required those playing along to use a striped paper, a dotted paper, and banners. So I pulled a photo that was in the pile on my desk and set about finding some papers that fit the requirements and suited the photo.
While the page is certainly not what I was originally planning on (I have a bunch of school themed papers from Foof-a-la, remember them?) that I adore and really wanted to use, but they didn't go so well with all the various colors the girls were wearing--they seemed to be fighting each other--the colors, not the girls LOL!
This darker cranberry color seems to work only because I kept the page fairly monochromatic and used the color almost as though it were a neutral.
The challenge was fun, it enabled (forced) me to look outside the box to choose papers, and another photo is scrapped that other wise would have languished on my desk while I mucked about for just the "perfect" papers. Love it!!!
Join in on a challenge, it's fun and you get something DONE!
best,
Cheryl

A Tip for Easier Stash Crashing!!!!
Just thought I'd yak about another way to choose papers and embellishments from your stash!
Think about creating a monochromatic layout. That is, looking through your pile of papers and/or a stack of embellishments and pull out items following the method of 1-2 neutrals plus 1 color choice.
Here's what I chose:
1. Wood grain background paper (neutral---beige, gray, white, tan)
2. Black small print for layering (neutral)
3. Black cardstock to border page (neutral --- repeating the black in one of the layering papers)
4. Solid gray and a gray/white small polka dot (neutral --- repeating colors of wood grain print)
5. Scraps of aqua layering papers, both solid and prints, pulled more, but ended up using
three different pieces of aqua papers (my one color)
6. Aqua colored embellishments, stickers and alpha Thickers (repeating my one color choice)
7. Black thread (repeating neutral)
8. Black and tan banner (repeating neutrals)
9. Wood veneer hearts (repeating neutral)
How did I choose aqua as my one color? Really...it was just a scrap laying on my desk and when I placed it under the edge of the photo of my grandson, I thought it looked nice. That's it! There were no real color choices to be made or conflicts, because the photo was a close-up of his face and he was wearing his black tux jacket with just a bit of that and his white dress shirt showing.
Once my selections were made, it was just a matter of layering up the photo so that small slivers of color or print peeked out here and there. And then tucked in some sticker banners, the speech bubble and the "awesome" sticker.
The page looked a bit square and sharp to me at this point, so I went back with some wadded up black thread and tucked that under the top left and bottom right corners of the layered photo. Now I need to point out that I don't really stick everything down till I am truly sure that's where it's going. In this case I had trimmed out the awesome sticker and just laid it in place still on it's slick backing sheet. Once the thread was tucked into place, then I peeled the sticker off it's backing and plunked 'er down!
The final step was to glue down a couple of little wood veneer hearts and to place small pieces of dimensional adhesive dots under the edges of the banners and speech bubble (to keep the outside edge of the sticker level with the layered photo).
Done and... More. Stash. Used. Up!

How I Crash My Stash! (i.e., using it up!)
So I had this wandering thought. Everyone talks about using up the stash of scrappy goodness we have all collected. And sometimes there are some pretty good you tube videos showing techniques and ideas for using up scraps. But what happens when you are faced with a big old pile of papers and a drawer (or two or three) full of embellishments.
It's sooooo much easier to reach for those most recently purchased items or the most recent kit you have received and then root about looking for photos that go with those items.
Sometimes I think this may be a bit backwards. I do it too, but it is counter-intuitive as to how I usually scrap. I like to start with the photo and then go about choosing papers, etc. Always have, and it works, for me. Now scrapping the other way 'round works and anything that gets your photos out of a pile and onto a page is good with me.
But it doesn't shrink that stash, does it?
So this is how I do it.
I choose the photo(s) I want to work with and then go digging through a pile (or two) of papers and pull papers that may work. I typically pull more than what gets used, but I like to have options. Unless I am sitting down to scrap right then, I put the photo(s) and papers into a page planner (not even sure if Cropper Hopper still makes these or if Cropper Hopper even still exists!) A file or a 2 gallon zip lock bag will also hold everything.
Then I may pull some embellishments and letter stickers and stick them in the back pocket of the planner. I do not pull inks or sprays or sequins ahead of time. Too messy, too bulky, and using them is too iffy. I mean, I won't know if I want any of those items until the page is pretty much done.
Then I may just go ahead and punch smaller scraps of the pulled papers or if I have a preconceived idea of what design the page will have, I will cut banners or strips from the smaller pieces too.
For this page, I thought I would do a whole line of banners and string this straight across the entire page (having seen a similar design--thinking I would scraplift the idea). But, as it often works out, this just didn't look right with these papers and my photo. So it took on a life of its' own (and that's ok with me too!).
The whole string of banners became a smaller, layered string and the page took on a more linear, down the center design, instead of being spread across the page. I didn't use the wood veneer stars or the beige-y alpha stickers or the yellow background piece. I did use a few wood veneer hearts, and I did have to dig about and find a scrap of dark red paper to punch a couple more little hearts from (just to repeat that bit of red about the photo, creating a visual triangle).
The colors repeat colors in the photos, the title echoes the hand cut banners and little hearts, well, come on, they're little hearts! Who doesn't like little hearts?!
When the paper is older, I am not nearly so cautious about cutting it up. Something freeing about that. You can use it at will, because that's the goal, to use it up. There's also something quite satisfying about NOT returning papers to the stash. (You have just freed up space that may allow you to purchase something newer without guilt!)

Cheryl

Easter Pickles?
Yep, there she is all dressed up for Easter and slurping away on a pickle. Nope, didn't want candy, no eggs, just pickles.
Had to add a touch of pickle-green because...you know it's all about the pickle... and the little girl.
Had a bit of a "pickle" (hahahaha I crack myself up) trying to layer some papers under the photos. I tried using my white tissue paper, nah, just didn't look right. A big old hunk of cardstock was just too block-y looking. So as I was picking through some things to be packed and thinking about what else to use as layering papers...a piece of embossed dotty paper slipped out onto the floor. Eureka! I snatched it right up slid it under one of the photos. Liked it so well I grabbed another plain piece of white cardstock to run that through the Sizzix, this time using a swirly embossing folder, then cut each embossed piece in half. After bending and crimping up the edges a bit, I had just the right layering papers. .
Also added a couple of punched border pieces in yellow and a doily. The little green banners are from Basic Grey ( I snagged a bunch of these in various colors, patterns and sizes, several months ago from Tuesday Morning). They are kind of a pain to remove from the packaging ---as they are sewn onto a piece of cardstock--- it is do-able---the stitching is quite strong! Anyway, after cutting up the banner, I placed it in three places to aid in developing a visual triangle.
The doily print paper is from Basic Grey (Nook and Pantry) and the background paper is the B side of an Authentique paper. Other embellishments include a couple of buttons, a couple of wood veneer butterflies, and another piece of one of those Basic Grey banners--this time in yellow. The chipboard letters used in the title are also from Basic Grey.
So really that's it. Not a lot going on in this one. Not a ton of layering. It was indeed all about the pickle... and the little girl.

Cheryl

Challenge: Layout #2 - Happy Dog
I thought I'd do a page about one of our dogs, Abbie, for the challenge. They are getting on in years now. Getting gray in the muzzle. moving a little slower. But they sleep right next to me at night (have to watch where I place my feet or I'm gonna trip on one of them in them in the middle of the night!), follow me to the bathroom, are waiting at the door when I get home. They are truly unconditional love.
I used several irregularly cut strips to create the border around the page, curled the edges a bit and then used the same papers (sometimes the flip side) to layer up under the two 4x4 photos. I wanted to use at least some of the alpha set that was included in the collection pack, but I have to say I am not a fan of the printed burlap. (What was I thinking when I bought this? Not a clue. I mean I still do like most of the papers... but not the burlap print...) But I was determined to use it. I had also purchased a set of cork die cut words at the same time as the collection pack, so I included this pack in my challenge. And I do like those. Although the cork is rather brittle and you really can't go yanking it off the acetate or it will tear. A gentler touch works just fine.
Anyway, I went on and cut some banners, added one of the flair badges, tucked in a couple of those mini sign things and a tab. Used one of the cork words as part of the title and used the alpha set for "dog". Last I added the shorter banners at the top of the page and a couple of the stickers. I always seem to do the smaller clusters at the top or sides of my page last...no real reason...that's just how it seems to work out.
That was it. This one didn't take very long at all to do. Kind of happy about that. And kind of happy to be using this collection up!

Cheryl

Sweater Weather Layout #7 - NASA?
Wow, seven layouts from one kit! I was not expecting this! I am way happy with how far this kit has stretched.
This page is a bit of a departure from cozy winter or holiday layouts, which is what you really think of first with a kit called Sweater Weather. I really loved the Scraptastic exclusive red, white and blue diagonal stripe that was in the kit, so after some digging around, I found these old, old, old photos of our Jacob man on a rocket-ship ride at a shopping mall play-park. Ah-ha! Seems like a good fit for some red, white and blue!
From my stash on this one, just the starry vellum, and some cardstock. I cut (Cricut) the title letters from red cardstock and the stars were cut from white cardstock with a Sizzix die (Primitive Stars).
After I tore the corner of the vellum for some interest, I placed a large strip of the striped paper down on the right side of the page. Then I tucked smaller strips of blue and red patterned papers under the photos and cut a few banners, as well as fussy cut a few little stars from the navy and wood grain star paper. The last thing added to the layout were the larger white die cut stars. Still not too sure about those stars; sometimes I look at the page and it seems far too busy and then again it will look ok. Do you have those pages too?
Journaling on the layout asks the question; will there even be NASA in the future? I think it is just a shame that one of the U.S.' biggest achievements (our space program) has been decimated by our (stupid) politicians (both Democrat and Republican--I hold both parties these days in equal disgust-- some of the stuff they choose to spend our money on just boggles the mind). This journaling is on the back of the layout. I don't think it hurts to let folks in the future know your views on current events or politics. It let's people know you better---but I also do not necessarily want this info taking over the page or the photos.
have a scrappy-dappie-dooo day!
(can you tell the little grandies have been here---watching Scooby-Doo!)

Sweater Weather Layout #3 - Grafton Christmas Parade
Feeling pretty good about what I am getting out of this kit (and I only have the main kit, no add-ons!). I am trying to stick fairly close to what has been included in the kit, although I'm not counting cardstock (or tissue paper). I have reached into my stash for things like sequins, sprays, the occasional tab or banner.
This page is just what it says it's about, attending our little hometown Christmas Parade. I have some more photos of the event; they will either go onto another facing page or another separate page for the kids' albums. Journaling is on the back, cuz it just did not fit nicely where I thought it was going to go.
And, this is why I like to blog. I just noticed that I did not outline the little banners I made for the cluster at the left side of the layout (I will go back and do that). I love taking pictures of my layouts and seeing them on the screen. Things show up that I just otherwise might not notice.
So speaking of clusters, I did punch a few snowflakes (from the papers provided, other than the plain white one). The photos are layered onto the Scraptastic exclusive papers; the red alphabet soup and the grey snowflake prints. I placed the photos in a four square grid onto several layers of irregularly cut tissue paper. The clusters were made using papers cut into banners, the stickers from the Carta Bella Warm and Cozy sticker sheet, a punched snowflake and the enamel dots included in the kit. One of the clusters (on the left side of the page) also included one of the wood veneer tags included in the kit.
The cardstock used as the base for the page was also in the kit. The color kind of surprised me. I would not have looked at this color if it had not been in the kit. But in my mission to use as much as possible from the kit, I was plopping the matted photos down on one piece after another of the various pieces I had left and this one worked!
From my stash on this one: the baker's twine, doily, tissue paper, a scrap of white cardstock for one of the snowflakes (the other two are punched from the red cardstock included and the My Mind's Eye woodgrain paper).
It would appear that my title is kind of crooked. But I did measure up from the bottom of the page...I think it is the irregular (crooked--slightly curved--tissue paper edges). I think I'm ok with it looking slightly wonky. After all, we are a slightly wonky family!
And that is layout #3, with more to come~

Winner, Winner...Chicken Dinner!
OK, so this has nothing whatsoever to do with chicken for dinner... Chicken I would have to make and clean up after... this is soooo much better! I won the current Sweater Weather Scraptastic kit via a contest at Mercy Tiara's you tube channel. (If you've never checked her videos out, I strongly encourage you to visit her --- I have her listed in my sidebar, under places to visit.)
Anyway.....Wow is all I can say. I like n.e.v.e.r win anything, so I was totally blown away to see my name listed as the winner of this scrumptious kit. And to top that off, the kit arrived only a couple of days later! Now I could take a few photos of the kit--- but better that you hop over to the Scraptastic site to check them out and besides there are several folks on you tube that do a share of their kit contents. I am so excited to go up to my little room tonight to play with my winnings! A public, big ole thank you to Mercy Tiara for my winnings!
In the meantime, I am putting up a travel themed page from my grandson's trip last June to Australia (and New Zealand and Hawaii).
The background paper is from a Studio Calico travel pack from Michael's, as are most of the layering papers. The brown and black checked pieces are from Basic Grey (a pet line from several years ago). Stitched banners are from Crate Paper and the "today" and "truly awesome" stickers I think are from Amy Tangerine. I softened the area under the photo layers using some gesso, did a little stamping (that weird branchy looking circle, the chevrons and the "wow" on the sunburst wood veneer) then tucked in some miscellaneous tags and a couple more wood veneer pieces.
So the story goes (that will also be included on one of these travel pages) is that my wonderful grandson was so very pleased with himself that he took 27 photos while on his trip. Um, 27 photos of a trip to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii? Hello, have you met your grandmother? Now to be fair this was a whirlwind trip, like three days in each place and it was a wrestling junket...but... 27 photos?
Stay tuned to see what I can create from the Sweater Weather kit and I did take photos of the gift card holders that I mentioned a while ago.
Now off to my room to play!
best!

Too Tired for Complicated Pages
Ho, Ho, Ho, It's my "after Christmas I'm so tired I can't think straight" time of year.
Time for an easy page layout. It helps that the paper was so easy to work with. Heidi Swapp's No Limits paper pack had this arrow border paper that needed little but to pile on some coordinating papers under my photo.
I added a few things; stamped title, a (for real) Bingo card, some tags (Pink Paislee and Tim Holtz), several banner stickers (from Glitz) for who, what, when kind of journaling, a strip of paper and a length of washi tape for the photo to rest on. After that, I fussy cut some of the circles from the circle patterned paper (I think that one was a scrap of old Cosmo Cricket), added some leftover pieces of border stickers, and glued on some teeny gold star sequins. But that's really about it. This was just stuff that was out on my desk and within easy reach. Just what I needed right now, an easy, no brainer kind of page.
I know I mentioned posting some of my gift card holders...the pictures I took were pretty awful. My daughter did put them aside Christmas Day so I could take photos again and hopefully I do a better job this time and can get that post up in the next day or two. (Cuz they really did turn out cute!)
best,
Cheryl
Time for an easy page layout. It helps that the paper was so easy to work with. Heidi Swapp's No Limits paper pack had this arrow border paper that needed little but to pile on some coordinating papers under my photo.

Stuff, Lots and Lots of Stuff (ephemera, stickers, and embellishments, oh my)
OK, so some scrappers can define their "style" by describing themselves as a simple scrapper, or a minimalist, or being all about the patterned paper, or some such description. But a defined style, me? mmm, yeah, no.
As much as I jump around from subject to subject and year to year. I also seem unable to remain within one "style" of scrapping. I can be perfectly enamored with lots of white space and minimal embellishments one week and the next be over the top for sticking on a stack of embellishments. (Which is where we are at today; stuff, lots and lots of stuff.)
When I saw some a couple of packs of very dimensional birthday embellishments at Michaels, I just loved them and snatched them right up. As it turns out, the paper rosettes, title banner, party hat and happy birthday sticker (part of the two different embellishment packs I grabbed) were re-branded Recollections, but are in fact part of the Party Day Maggie Holmes collection (no wonder I loved them). I already had the ephemera pack (snared at Hobby Lobby weeks and weeks earlier) and sometime later I lucked into finding the Party Day paper pad on clearance.
Now, with all this Party Day stuff collected I sat down to make Bella's party page. Used two different background pieces, the diagonal red and pink stripe and the grid paper. Prior to this I had stacked up and stapled together little piles of the flat ephemera, so I just tucked a couple of the piles in and around the photos. I added the rosette and the party hat and then the banner title, which kind of gave me fits. I mean that part should have been easy, peas-y. But the title looked flat, so I cut out an extra sunburst layer for each of the letters and popped every other one up. The sticker letters are from Echo Park, Little Girl sticker sheet and I think the party, play-fun day piece is from Heidi Swapp, but otherwise everything is Party Day.
Where am I going with all this? Well, there is a lotta, lotta of stuff on this page, lots more than I usually use. So just when I think I have myself figured out style-wise, um, not so much. I guess we'll just go with it and see where we end up.
see where you end up, surprise!

Another prom layout today.
Jacob and his date posing for the customary photos... Ah, don't they look sweet? I just love prom pictures; the girls all done up and their pretty dresses, the boys all cleaned up and looking so grown up in their tuxes.
I used some grey prints (the stripe and the damask) that had no markings on them to tell me who made them. I wanted just small touches of yellow to pick up on her dress, but didn't want an entirely yellow layout, so I used a soft grey cardstock for the background and the grey prints, then tucked in small pieces from a cut apart sheet from Crate paper, the yellow check (from Lily Bee), a punched piece of yellow cardstock, small pieces of a doily, and flowers from Prima and Petaloo, The alphas are silver glitter Thickers (Dear Lizzy); banners were hand cut from the grey print papers.
It's early... gonna hit some scrappy blogs this morning with my coffee, give the house a quick once over in case we get a call for a showing, then sneak in a little scrapping before the grandies come over.
What are you doing today? Hopefully a little paper is involved!

Just when you think you are free and clear, with critical matters handled... the car decides to break down. Had another house showing late this afternoon, made it home from work with enough time to change out of work garb, grab the dogs and leashes, then was going to move my car to the street, when.... it wouldn't start. Wouldn't take a jump...but electrical stuff works. DH thinks its the starter. Now I know this is not a huge thing, in the grander scheme of things. But I truly just want to be able to come home from work and, I don't know...do nothing? But onward we go. Because, what else can we do?
Onward...
Today's layout is, once again, one that I did for Jacob's grad album. I did a similar one of his high school photos, but this page went into album #1 (he actually received two albums from me--one was his younger years and the second one was all high school stuff).
I wanted a representation of him as a baby, but not a bunch of baby photos. So again used a grid type arrangement and wallet size photos like I did with his high school pics. Papers were from Lily Bee (I think--it's that piece of aqua floral behind the photos), Maggie Holmes (from my $5 bargain pack) and a piece of...I truly have no idea where it came from...hahaha---I really haven't a clue--gotta start writing this stuff down--now there's a novel thought.
The numbers are wood veneer pieces I bought at Michael's--actually bought a couple of packs because numbers are kind of hard to come by. The month and days after the numbers are Cosmo Cricket Tiny Type. The layered banner is Heidi Swapp, although I added the "love you" with October Afternoon and Cosmo Cricket alpha stickers. Then did a little outlining and my journaling and left well enough alone.
And here we go, onward, right?
Best!
